Pastor Rob Carlson:
"God Has Called You"
Series: It's Your Serve
Sunday, September 14, 2003

Matt. 20:28--Jesus did not come to be served but to serve and to give his life...

John 20:21--...As the Father has sent me, I am sending you."

Mark 10:43-45--...whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be slave of all. For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.

ANSWERING THE CALL

1. We have been given a common mission.

Matthew 28:18-20--Then Jesus came to them and said, "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age."

Jesus was a Bridge Builder (John 4)

Ephesians 4:16--From him the whole body, joined and held together by every supporting ligament, grows and builds itself up in love, as each part does its work.

2. We have received a common mandate.

Matthew 22:37-40--Jesus replied: " 'Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.' This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: 'Love your neighbor as yourself.' All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments."

John 15:12, 13, 17--My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you. Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends. This is my command: Love each other.

John 13: 34-35--A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. 35By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.

3. We must have a common passion.

Matthew 15:32--Jesus called his disciples to him and said, "I have compassion for these people; they have already been with me three days and have nothing to eat. I do not want to send them away hungry, or they may collapse on the way."

Matthew 9:36--When he saw the crowds, he had compassion on them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd.

Small Group Discussion Questions:

  1. How does it make you feel and what comes to your mind when you consider that God has personally "called" you?
  2. Review the points and Bible verses from this lesson.
What personal application can you make from this week's teaching?
  3. In what specific way are you living out and developing your call this new ministry year?
  4. Take some time right now to pray for the needs of those in your small group.
