GOD'S INCREDIBLES:
What Bible Characters Teach Us About Life, Leadership, and the Power of God
"TIMOTHY: Incredible Lessons from an Incredible Young Man"
Pastor Jeff Duchemin
Sunday, August 7, 2005

1 Timothy 4:12
Don't let anyone look down on you because you are young,
but set an example for the believers in speech, in life, in love, in faith and in purity.

Philippians 2:19-24
I hope in the Lord Jesus to send Timothy to you soon, that I also may be cheered when I receive news about you. I have no one else like him, who takes a genuine interest in your welfare. For everyone looks out for his own interests, not those of Jesus Christ. But you know that Timothy has proved himself, because as a son with his father he has served with me in the work of the gospel. I hope, therefore, to send him as soon as I see how things go with me. And I am confident in the Lord that I myself will come soon.

Incredible lessons from an incredible young man:

1. Take a genuine interest in other people's lives.

Phil 2:4--Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others. Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus: Who, being in very nature God,did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, but made himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself and became obedient to death- even death on a cross!

What does it mean to take a genuine interest:
1. Caring and listening
2. Helping
3. __________________
(you fill in the blank...)

2. Be willing to move out of your comfort zone.

Our job: Faithfulness
God’s job: Results

3.Watch your life and doctrine.

1 Tim 4:11-16--Command and teach these things. Don't let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in life, in love, in faith and in purity. Until I come, devote yourself to the public reading of Scripture, to preaching and to teaching. Do not neglect your gift, which was given you through a prophetic message when the body of elders laid their hands on you. Be diligent in these matters; give yourself wholly to them, so that everyone may see your progress. Watch your life and doctrine closely. Persevere in them, because if you do, you will save both yourself and your hearers.

Share 3 of the doctrines:

1. The Inspired Word of God.
2. The Deity of the Lord Jesus Christ.
3. Fall of Man.

Small Group Discussion Questions

1. What stops you from moving out of your comfort zone more often?

2. Review the points and Bible verses from this lesson. What personal application can you make from this week's teaching?

3. Share a time someone took a genuine interest in your life.

4. Take some time right now to pray for the needs of those in your small group.
