Pastor Rob Carlson:
"God Knows My Name" (Experience Intimacy with the Almighty)
Pastor Rob Carlson • Sunday, August 29, 2004
Psalm 139 (pages 618-619 in pew Bible)

40 Days of Purpose: Today, prepare your heart. Maximize this opportunity to focus on growing intimate with God.

PSALM 139
Standing at the center of the psalm is Almighty God, towering and awesome.
He is omniscient (vs. 1-6), omnipresent (vs. 7-12), omnipotent (vs. 13-18).
Our all-knowing, ever-present, preeminently powerful God knows us, envelops us, and cares for us from the womb to the tomb.

12 DAILY DEVOTIONAL THOUGHTS ABOUT GOD:

1. God knows me

Psalm 139:1--O LORD , you have searched me and you know me.

2. He scrutinizes my life

Psalm 139:2-3--You know when I sit and when I rise; you perceive my thoughts from afar.
You discern my going out and my lying down; you are familiar with all my ways.

3. He knows my every word

Psalm 139:4--Before a word is on my tongue you know it completely, O LORD.

4. God's hand of guidance and protection never lifts

Psalm 139:5-6--You hem me in-behind and before; you have laid your hand upon me.
Such knowledge is too wonderful for me, too lofty for me to attain.

5. I cannot escape His presence

Psalm 139:7-10--Where can I go from your Spirit? Where can I flee from your presence?
If I go up to the heavens, you are there; if I make my bed in the depths,  you are there.
If I rise on the wings of the dawn, if I settle on the far side of the sea,
even there your hand will guide me,your right hand will hold me fast.

6. Not even darkness eclipses our relationship

Psalm 139:11-12--If I say, "Surely the darkness will hide me and the light become night around me,"
even the darkness will not be dark to you; the night will shine like the day, for darkness is as light to you.

7. When we were conceived, God was there

Psalm 139:13--For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother's womb.

8. As we were formed in the womb, God superintended the process

Psalm 139:14-16--I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well.
My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place. When I was woven together in the depths of the earth,
your eyes saw my unformed body. All the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be.

9. Whether we are asleep or awake, He's always there

Psalm 139:17-18--How precious to me are your thoughts, O God! How vast is the sum of them!
Were I to count them, they would outnumber the grains of sand. When I awake, I am still with you.

10. His love wins my heart

Psalm 139:19-22--If only you would slay the wicked, O God! Away from me, you bloodthirsty men!
They speak of you with evil intent; your adversaries misuse your name.
Do I not hate those who hate you, O LORD, and abhor those who rise up against you?
I have nothing but hatred for them; I count them my enemies.

11. He knows my every feeling of anxiety

Psalm 139:23--Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts.

12. God purifies my life

Psalm 139:24--See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.
