Pastor Rob Carlson:
"Healthy Relationships #4: Patience"
Sunday, June 1, 2003

Galatians 5:22,23--But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.

Proverbs 14:29--A patient man has great understanding, but a quick-tempered man displays folly.

DEFINITION:
Patience = slow to get angry

7 KEYS ON HOW TO MANAGE MY ANGER

1. Resolve to manage it.

Proverbs 16:2 [LB]--It is better to be slow-tempered than famous; it is better to have self-control than to control an army.

2. Realize the cost.

Proverbs 29:22 [LB]--A hot-tempered man starts fights and gets into all kinds of trouble.

3. Reflect before reacting.

Proverbs 29:11 [NEB]--A stupid man gives free reign to his anger; a wise man waits and lets it grow cool.

Why am I angry?

4. Release anger appropriately.

Ephesians 4:26 [GN]--If you become angry, do not let your anger lead you into sin.

Proverbs 29:11--A fool gives full vent to his anger, but a wise man keeps himself under control.

How do you respond to anger? There are 4 possible options, but 3 of them don't work.

5. Re-pattern my mind.

Romans 12:2a--...be transformed by the renewing of your mind.

6. Relate to people who are patient.

Proverbs 22:24-25--Do not make friends with a hot-tempered man, do not associate with one easily angered, or you may learn his ways and get yourself ensnared.

7. Rely on Christ's help.

Romans 15:5 [LB]--May God who gives patience, steadiness, and encouragement help you live in complete harmony with each other--each with the attitude of Christ toward the other.
