Text: Philippians 2 (page 1162 in pew Bible) and Matthew 5 (page 958 in pew Bible) 

Philippians 2:5--Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus 

 

1. I must have an accurate assessment of myself. 

Beatitude #1: 
Matthew 5:3--Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 

Attitude: I am nothing without God. 

 

2. I must have admit my mistakes. 

Beatitude #2: 
Matthew 5:4--Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted. 

Attitude: I must be honest and come clean--immediately, completely. 

 

3. I must respect others. 

Beatitude #3: 
Matthew 5:5--Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth. 

Attitude: How I treat others says a lot about my devotion to Christ. 

 

4. I must have a deep desire to do what’s right.  

Beatitude #4: 
Matthew 5:6--Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled. 

Attitude: Do the right thing regardless of personal cost; be good, do good. 

 

5. I must be eager to forgive. 

Beatitude #5: 
Matthew 5:7--Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy.

Attitude: Since I desperately need grace, I will generously give grace. 

 

6. I must constantly question my motives. 

Beatitude #6: 
Matthew 5:8--Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God. 
(See also Proverbs 4:23) 

Attitude: God knows my heart and thoughts; I want to honor Him with my heart and thoughts. 

 

7. I must be a promoter of peace. 

Beatitude #7: 
Matthew 5:9--Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called sons of God. 

Attitude: I want to become like Jesus--the Prince of Peace. 

 

8. I must be a person of conviction. 

Beatitude #8: 
Matthew 5:10-12--Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me. Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you. 

Attitude: I must stand for what is godly. 

 

Small Group Discussion Questions: 

  1. How does our attitude affect the way we live? 
  2. Review the points and Bible verses from this lesson. 
    What personal application can you make from this week's teaching? 
  3. When you study Christ's attitude (Philippians 2) and His teaching on the Beatitudes (Matthew 5), 
    what commonalities and applications can you find for your own life?  
  4. Take some time right now to pray for the needs of those in your small group.
