"What
Child Is This?"
Sunday, December 21, 2003
Matthew 1:21-- She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.
Jesus means “Jehovah saves” or “The Lord of salvation.”
1. It is an easy name.
No voice can sing,
Nor heart can frame,
Nor can the memory find;
A sweeter sound than thy blest name,
O Savior of mankind.
-Bernard of Clarivoux
2. It is an esteemed name.
Numbers 13:16--These are the names of the men Moses sent to explore the land. (Moses gave Hoshea son of Nun the name Joshua.)
Hebrews 4:8--For if Joshua had given them rest, God would not have spoken later about another day.
3. It is an enduring name.
4. It is an exalted name.
Ephesians 1:20-22--which he exerted in Christ when he raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly realms, far above all rule and authority, power and dominion, and every title that can be given, not only in the present age but also in the one to come. And God placed all things under his feet and appointed him to be head over everything for the church,
Philippians 2:9-11--Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
5. It is an exclusive name.
Acts 4:12--Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to men by which we must be saved.
